No Change to Mutiara Line Specs: Minister Denies Tender Downsizing Claims

Butterworth, 20 September 2025 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has firmly rejected claims that the specifications for the electric train system in the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang are being reduced. These allegations, which surfaced via industry sources, are unsubstantiated, according to Loke, as the tender is still in the evaluation phase and no contract has been awarded.

The issue arose after a news portal reported that Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) requested bidders to submit alternative proposals for smaller train sets with lower technological capabilities. However, Loke clarified that such reports are false and stressed there has been no instruction to change the specifications at this stage.

He also reassured stakeholders that local participation remains integral to the procurement process. This includes keeping the assembly of train components in Malaysia, a move intended to support local industry and maintain the original technical criteria.

The Mutiara Line LRT is designed to run 29.5 kilometres and includes 21 stations, enhancing connectivity between Penang island and the mainland. It is part of the region’s broader effort to reduce road congestion and improve accessibility.
