PUTRAJAYA, 10 September 2025 — Malaysia has announced that all prepaid SIM card registrations will rely solely on MyDigital ID digital identity verification by the end of this year, as part of a drive to bolster the nation’s digital security framework.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, speaking after a meeting of the National Council for the Digital Economy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, explained that telecommunications providers will soon be mandated to integrate MyDigital ID into their SIM card registration systems.
“This will be enforced, God willing, by the end of this year,” he affirmed. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will issue further implementation guidance. Fahmi emphasised that the shift is critical to close existing loopholes and prevent misuse of mobile services by unscrupulous entities.
Local cybersecurity experts have long pointed out that lax SIM registration processes have enabled malicious actors to exploit anonymity online. As cited by the press, Siraj Jalil, president of the Malaysia Cyber Consumer Association, noted that without tightening SIM registration, efforts to improve age verification on platforms like TikTok could falter—even if stricter controls are applied at the social media level.
This policy represents the government’s commitment to reinforcing trust in its digital infrastructure as part of broader cybersecurity reforms. By anchoring SIM identities to verified digital identities, Malaysia aims to safeguard users and bolster the integrity of online services.
