Hong Kong, 7 September 2025 — The Hong Kong Observatory is escalating tropical storm precautions by issuing the No. 8 typhoon signal tonight at 9:20 pm, as Tropical Cyclone Tapah edges closer and poses a heightened risk to the region. The storm is expected to pass within 200 km southwest of the city by sunrise, prompting authorities to maintain the alert at least until 11:00 am Monday, officials confirmed.
Residents can expect storm-level conditions, including gale-force winds, torrential showers, and rough seas accompanied by high swells. In light of the forecast, Monday’s full-day school closures have been announced for all levels—from kindergartens to tertiary institutions—as a preemptive measure to safeguard students and staff.
Tapah, a tropical cyclone whose name originates from the Malay term for a giant freshwater catfish, is poised to make landfall over western Guangdong province in the early hours of Monday. Flooding is a significant concern, especially in low-lying and coastal areas, where rising tides and storm surges may compound risks.
