China Narrows US Gap in Global Development Goals as Sustainability Race Intensifies

Beijing, 25 June 2026 – China is on track to surpass the United States in its progress towards global goals for human and planetary well-being, reflecting a significant shift in sustainable development performance among the world’s largest economies.

The latest Sustainable Development Report 2026 found that China has closed much of the gap with the United States since the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were adopted in 2015. The report tracks progress across 17 goals covering poverty reduction, health, education, gender equality, clean energy, climate action, sustainable cities, innovation, inequality and environmental protection.
