KUALA LUMPUR, 2 April 2026 β Chin Hin Group Berhad successfully concluded its AI Hackathon 2026, From +AI to AI+, marking a pivotal step in the Groupβs transformation into an AI-driven enterprise while nurturing Malaysiaβs next generation of digital talent.
The six-week initiative brought together 150 final-year university students across 37 teams, tasked with solving real-world business challenges using artificial intelligence. Unlike conventional academic competitions, the hackathon focused on practical execution, with participants building commercial-ready AI prototypes based on actual operational needs within Chin Hin Group.
From Theory to Enterprise-Ready AI Solutions
Participants worked on 12 real-world business challenges, developing solutions using Microsoft Foundry and collaborating directly with Chin Hinβs business leaders.
The programme emphasised hands-on innovation, guided by the motto:
βAI to win. Speed decides. Boldness defines.β
Rather than theoretical outputs, teams were required to deliver:
- Minimal viable products (MVPs) with real deployment potential
- Scalable AI solutions aligned with enterprise needs
- Practical applications that address operational efficiency and business growth
The hackathon featured two key tracks:
- Productivity Challenge β enhancing internal workflows and efficiency
- Business Application Challenge β building AI-driven commercial solutions
Seven finalist teams advanced to the final pitching stage, showcasing solutions that combined speed, technical capability, and strong commercial understanding.
Driving the Shift from +AI to AI+
Chin Hin Group is positioning the initiative as part of a broader strategic shift, moving from using AI as an enhancement tool (+AI) to embedding AI at the core of operations (AI+).
Abel Saw, Group Chief Transformation Officer, highlighted that the hackathon was designed to produce real business outcomes, not just experimentation.
βThis hackathon reflects our shift from using AI as a tool to embedding it as a core capability. These teams demonstrated the mindset required as we move toward AI+, where AI drives how we operate, decide, and compete.β
This transition signals a deeper integration of AI across the Groupβs value chain, from decision-making to execution.
Co-Creation Model: Bridging Talent and Industry
A key differentiator of the hackathon was its co-creation model, where students worked closely with business owners.
This approach enabled:
- Direct alignment between innovation and business needs
- Faster iteration cycles and real-time feedback
- Higher likelihood of deployment-ready solutions
The initiative reflects a growing trend in corporate innovation, where enterprises collaborate directly with emerging talent to accelerate digital transformation.
Supporting Malaysiaβs AI Nation Ambition
Beyond corporate transformation, the hackathon aligns with Malaysiaβs broader ambition to become an AI Nation by 2030.
Chin Hinβs initiative contributes to this vision by:
- Developing AI-ready talent pipelines
- Promoting applied AI innovation in real industries
- Encouraging collaboration between academia and enterprise
The Group also acknowledged the support of strategic partners including Kabel, SRKK, and Microsoft, which played key roles in enabling the programme.
A Strategic Signal for Corporate Malaysia
For investors and industry observers, the hackathon sends a strong signal about Chin Hin Groupβs long-term direction.
Traditionally known for its presence in building materials, construction, and property, the Group is now:
- Embedding digital capabilities across its operations
- Leveraging AI to enhance efficiency and competitiveness
- Positioning itself within the broader digital economy
This reflects a wider shift across corporate Malaysia, where traditional sectors are increasingly adopting advanced technologies to remain competitive.
Asian Investor Perspective: AI Moves Beyond Big Tech
The development highlights a critical evolution in the AI landscape:
AI adoption is no longer limited to technology firms β it is becoming core to industrial and infrastructure players.
Key implications include:
- Broader AI adoption across traditional sectors
- New investment opportunities in digital transformation plays
- Growing importance of talent development in sustaining innovation
Companies that successfully integrate AI into their core operations are likely to gain a structural competitive advantage in the coming decade.
Outlook: From Hackathon to Enterprise Deployment
As Chin Hin transitions from +AI to AI+, the key focus now shifts to execution, turning prototypes into fully deployed solutions.
The Group has signalled openness to:
- Industry partnerships and technology collaborations
- Scaling successful AI solutions across its businesses
- Engaging future talent to sustain innovation momentum
The hackathon marks not just a milestone, but the beginning of a broader transformation journey.
