Tokyo, Japan, 11 August 2026 – Japan’s central government debt reached a record ¥1,346.6833 trillion at the end of June, rising ¥2.8407 trillion from three months earlier as public spending continued to exceed tax revenue.
Data from the Ministry of Finance show that general government bonds accounted for ¥1,110.8839 trillion of the total, an increase of ¥6.5855 trillion over the quarter. Borrowings declined by ¥3.787 trillion to ¥40.5374 trillion, while short-term government securities rose by ¥2.0999 trillion to ¥94.3994 trillion.
