KUALA LUMPUR — Issues surrounding Malaysia’s preparedness for an ageing population and a proposal to halt new residential developments in Kuala Lumpur will take centre stage in today’s Dewan Rakyat session.
According to the Order Papers published on Parliament’s website, Sim Tze Tzin (PH–Bayan Baru) is scheduled to ask the Minister of Economy about measures to tackle the ageing population challenge, along with projections on population growth, birth rates, deaths, and marriages for the next decade.
Meanwhile, Young Syefura Othman (PH–Bentong) will raise a question to the Prime Minister on whether the government intends to enforce a moratorium on housing projects in Kuala Lumpur. This comes in light of Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) data showing the capital’s population is expected to peak in 2031, nearly three decades earlier than the national projection.
During the oral question-and-answer session, Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (PN–Tanah Merah) will seek clarification from the Defence Minister on the ownership of the AW149 helicopter assembly plant in Batu Berendam, Melaka, to be developed by Leonardo with government funding. He will also ask whether the Defence Ministry was consulted before the project was approved.
Additionally, Wong Shu Qi (PH–Kluang) will question the Prime Minister on the volume of complaints lodged through the Public Complaints Management System (SISPAA) between 2018 and June 30, 2025. She will also request details on the three government agencies that recorded the highest number of complaints and the reasons behind them.
Datuk Willie Mongin (GPS–Puncak Borneo) is expected to ask the Foreign Minister for the latest evaluation of armed conflicts in the Middle East, as well as whether Malaysia plans to reassess its foreign policy to safeguard economic, security, and national interests in the region.
Following the Q&A session, the Dewan Rakyat will move to the second reading of two bills — the Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the National Registration (Amendment) Bill 2025.
The current sitting, which began on July 21, is scheduled to conclude on August 28.
