Singapore’s Prime Minister Wong Begins First Official Visit to India, Celebrating 60 Years of Diplomatic Ties

SINGAPORE / NEW DELHI, 2 September 2025 – Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, embarks today on his first official visit to India since assuming office, marking a three-day stay in New Delhi from 2 to 4 September 2025. The visit is timed to commemorate the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations between the two nations—an important milestone underscoring the strength and continuity of the Singapore–India partnership.

Diplomatic and Economic Agenda

At the invitation of Indian PM Narendra Modi, PM Wong will participate in high-level engagements, including:

  • A banquet lunch with PM Modi, and formal calls on President Droupadi Murmu
  • Bilateral meetings with key Indian officials and ministers—covering finance, external affairs, health, education, and national security—including Nirmala Sitharaman, S. Jaishankar, J.P. Nadda, and Ajit Doval
  • Paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat
  • Hosting a reception for overseas Singaporeans on the occasion of SG60 (Singapore’s 60th year of independence) and the diplomatic anniversary
  • A closed-door roundtable with Indian business leaders aimed at strengthening commercial ties

This visit follows closely on the footsteps of other high-profile engagements, such as the third India–Singapore Ministerial Roundtable and the fourth Joint Working Group on Trade & Investment held in New Delhi recently. These meetings laid groundwork for Wong’s diplomatic mission and focused on expanding trade, investment, and multi-sector cooperation.

Singapore and India’s relationship has evolved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, deepening collaboration in areas such as fintech, digital innovation, education, and strategic connectivity. PM Wong’s visit will reinforce this trajectory, offering scope to:

  • Bolster trade and investment flows, building on India’s status as a favoured destination for Singaporean capital and vice versa
  • Harness the diaspora advantage, aligning Singapore’s global financial and digital ecosystem with Indian innovation and talent
  • Further ASEAN–India cooperation on digital infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and urban resilience—areas critical for regional integration and economic diversification

Aligned with shifting geopolitical landscapes, the visit also reaffirms Singapore’s role as a bridge between ASEAN and South Asia—balancing engagements across major global powers while deepening mutual interests.
