Singapore Tightens Waste Rules After Alleged Johor Dumping Case

Singapore, 19 August 2026 – Singapore’s environmental regulator has reminded licensed general-waste disposal facilities that construction and demolition waste cannot be exported for disposal, as authorities investigate alleged illegal dumping in Pontian, Johor. The advisory places cross-border waste movements under sharper operational and compliance scrutiny.

Facilities handling such material must process and sort it locally before disposal or recovery. The rule is designed to prevent waste generated in Singapore from being shifted to another jurisdiction without appropriate treatment. A narrow exception applies to homogeneous ferrous scrap that qualifies as recyclable material and can be exported subject to the relevant requirements. That distinction makes documentation, sorting quality and end-market verification central to compliance.
