Seoul, 19 August 2026 – The South Korean won strengthened past the closely watched psychological resistance threshold of 1,400 per US dollar on Wednesday, touching an intraday high of 1,399 won to reach its strongest valuation in more than ten months amid broad-based greenback moderation and accelerated foreign exchange conversions by domestic exporters.
The local currency commenced trading at 1,413.30 won per dollar in the Seoul foreign exchange market before steadily gathering upward momentum throughout the trading session. The intraday breach of the 1,400 benchmark marks the won’s first move into sub-1,400 territory since October 2025, breaking out of a prolonged period of currency depreciation driven by global interest rate divergence and capital market volatility.
