KUALA LUMPUR: A key witness for the prosecution in Lim Guan Eng’s corruption trial was assaulted by a group of 10 men who forced their way into his residence near Petaling Jaya today.
According to a source familiar with the trial, the victim suffered multiple injuries to his face and hand after the attackers broke in. The assailants reportedly tied up two security guards before entering the house.
“They warned him to stay home and not try to play the hero,” the source said.
Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja’afar confirmed the incident, saying an official statement would be issued soon.
Lead prosecutor Datuk Wan Shahruddin Wan Ladin said the prosecution would raise the matter when the trial resumes on Aug 19.
Lim, who also serves as DAP adviser, is facing several corruption charges in the Sessions Court related to the Penang Undersea Tunnel project.
He is accused of using his position as Penang chief minister to solicit gratification from Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd (CZCSB) director Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli in return for helping secure the project.
The charges allege Lim sought 10% of the company’s profits from Zarul, accepted RM3.3 million in personal payments, and arranged for two plots of state land to be transferred to companies linked to the project.
