Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 31 October 2026 – Maritime Network Sdn Bhd chief executive Datuk Seri Jeyenderan R. said local banks’ view of bunkering as a high-risk business is limiting finance for vessels and specialist operating assets. He cited supply of about 600,000 tonnes through 2013 and 200,000 tonnes now, but the report did not specify the measurement period behind those figures.
The financing question matters to Asian shipping because Malaysia is trying to build its marine-fuel services while competing with established regional centres. Jeyenderan said Singapore-based investors often use Singaporean banks, meaning local financing opportunities may be missed; that is his assessment, not evidence that a specific contract or investment has moved. Malaysia has separately set a 2030 goal for an Asia-Pacific bunkering hub and will centralise licence approvals from February 2027.
