San Francisco, United States, 31 October 2026 – OpenAI and Anthropic said in October that their AI systems had produced results challenging the exponential time hypothesis, a long-standing conjecture in theoretical computer science. OpenAI says its model found a disproof on 16 October and formalised it in Lean the next day; Anthropic has published a sub-exponential-time algorithm for 3-SAT. Computer scientists Russell Impagliazzo, Ramamohan Paturi and Ryan Williams are organising independent review.
The claims matter because hundreds of studies use the hypothesis to set conditional limits on how quickly problems can be solved. If the proofs withstand scrutiny, some theoretical results may need reassessment; everyday software would not automatically become faster. The companies have released proof materials, but community review remains under way, so the claims are not yet settled consensus or an immediate commercial breakthrough.
