Kuala Lumpur, 19 August 2026 – Malaysia is looking to Japan’s disciplined approach to waste separation as it seeks to make cleaner habits part of daily life and accelerate a transition towards a circular economy. The policy discussion is moving beyond collection targets to the behaviour, infrastructure and education needed to keep materials in use for longer.
The housing and local government minister said Japan’s practice of separating waste at source offers a practical lesson. In Japan, sorting is integrated into household routines, supported by clear rules and local systems. Malaysia’s challenge is to turn similar behaviour from an occasional compliance exercise into a shared civic norm.
