Japan Trade Deficit Widens as Imports Outpace Export Surge

Tokyo, 16 September 2026 – Japan recorded a sharp expansion in both exports and imports in August, but faster import growth widened the trade deficit to about JPY1.106 trillion. The figures signal resilient external demand alongside renewed pressure from energy costs, leaving companies and investors to assess whether stronger volumes can offset imported inflation and margin compression.

Exports rose 19.3% from a year earlier to JPY10.048 trillion, while imports increased 28.0% to JPY11.154 trillion. The deficit was roughly 275.9% larger than a year earlier. Exports to the United States advanced 24.9%, and shipments to China rose 20.6%, providing broad geographic support.
