Hong Kong Cuts Environmental Review Times by Half Through AI and Data Reform

Hong Kong, China, 17 August 2026 – Hong Kong has cut the time required for environmental impact assessment procedures roughly in half by combining regulatory reform with artificial intelligence and a territory-wide environmental database.

The overall process previously took about 36 to 48 months and has been reduced to around 15 to 24 months. Authorities say environmental standards and statutory public-participation requirements remain in place.
