London, 5 November 2026 – Campaigners say Google’s London office refused to accept a petition backed by about 54,000 people opposing its proposed data-centre development at the former Arena Essex Raceway. The attempted delivery took place on 4 November. Google would not confirm or deny the refusal, but defended the infrastructure project and said it was taking its environmental responsibilities seriously.
The dispute matters to investors in AI and cloud infrastructure because securing land and capital does not settle questions of local acceptance, habitat protection and project delivery. The petition is evidence of organised opposition, not a planning refusal. Google’s sustainability commitments are part of its response, but they do not establish that the proposed development has already produced the environmental gains the company describes.
