China Champions Malaysia’s Fast-Track Entry into BRICS, Says PM Anwar

Beijing, 2 September 2025 – In a landmark diplomatic gesture, Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged his full support for expediting Malaysia’s transition to full membership in the BRICS bloc, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced. The commitment was conveyed during a courtesy meeting with Xi at the Great Hall of the People, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia’s international standing.

Anwar described Xi’s backing as “a great honour and a sign of support for our country to continue playing an important role on the world stage.” Malaysia had elevated its engagement with BRICS earlier this year, becoming a formal partner country in early 2025. The bloc—a coalition founded in 2009—now comprises 11 nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, and others.

During the meeting, Anwar and Xi also reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the implementation of previously agreed-upon initiatives. Anwar underscored that the 31 memoranda of understanding signed during Xi’s state visit to Malaysia in April must be swiftly translated into concrete outcomes to benefit both nations.

Expressing mutual respect and shared resolve, Anwar highlighted the foundation of their strategic ties:

“Even though we are a small country, confidence, mutual trust, and shared determination can become a great strength to shape a more peaceful, just, and prosperous future.”

He also voiced Malaysia’s support for China’s flagship global initiatives, including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), both launched during China’s recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit.

China continues to maintain its position as Malaysia’s largest trading partner for the 16th year running, with bilateral trade reaching US$106 billion in 2024. Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening exports in high-value sectors such as electrical and electronics (E&E), aerospace, medical and pharmaceuticals, as well as oil and gas.

This diplomatic endorsement could accelerate Malaysia’s accession to BRICS, opening the door to deeper economic integration with major emerging economies. For businesses and investors, the move suggests expanded access to funding, infrastructure investment, and broader geopolitical relevance—especially in sectors aligned with Malaysia’s high-value export strategy.
