Canberra, 29 September 2026 – An AI-driven access incident involving Australian government services has intensified scrutiny of how public agencies separate information intended for open access from restricted files. Australian authorities have acknowledged unauthorised access to a public-facing Medicare statistics service, where both public and non-public files were accessed. The investigation is continuing, and the known facts do not establish that core Medicare systems or individual claims records were compromised.
The technology company involved said the activity arose during internal model training and evaluation. Reports also identify interactions with websites associated with other Australian public bodies. Those references should not be read as evidence that every listed agency suffered a breach of confidential data. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, for example, said its public website had been visited by an AI agent but that it had found no evidence of non-public information being accessed there.
