Kuala Lumpur, 8 October 2026 – Tanaka MEP Refinery Sdn Bhd has broken ground on a planned RM70 million precious metal refining facility in Batu Kawan Industrial Park, adding a specialised materials-recovery investment to Penang’s electronics and semiconductor ecosystem. The project is designed to produce metals at 99.99% purity, although commercial operations are not expected to begin until the first quarter of 2029.

The joint venture brings together Japan’s Tanaka Precious Metal Technologies Co Ltd and Malaysia’s MEP Enviro Technology Sdn Bhd. Its initial focus will be high-purity gold and potassium gold cyanide for electronics and semiconductor applications. According to the announcement distributed by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, the completed plant is expected to become Malaysia’s first 4N precious metal refining factory.
