Seattle, 22 September 2026 – Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse artificial-intelligence agent from browsing and making purchases on its retail site, sharpening a dispute over who controls the customer relationship in automated shopping. Muse was introduced this month to help users complete tasks including purchases and appointments. Amazon said third-party agents should operate openly and respect a retailer’s decision about participation. Meta had not provided a public response in the initial report.
The immediate commercial impact may be limited because most consumers still use AI tools to research products rather than complete purchases. The strategic implications are wider. If an external agent handles search, recommendations and checkout, the retailer could lose some control over discovery, advertising placement and customer data. Amazon’s decision therefore protects more than server access; it preserves a business model built on bringing shoppers into its own environment.
