Tokyo, 6 October 2026 – Japan will not add a fresh petroleum-reserve release to the Group of Seven’s coordinated 100-million-barrel drawdown, arguing that supplies are already being released, a decision that highlights the balance between near-term price relief and preserving emergency energy buffers.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan had been drawing from reserves and would not undertake additional measures on this occasion. The G7 agreement calls for releases through the International Energy Agency to begin immediately and continue for four months, including a substantial diesel component within the first 20 days. Members also committed to coordinate refinery maintenance and avoid restrictions on energy exports within the group.
