Hong Kong, 17 September 2026 – The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has raised its base rate by 25 basis points to 4.25%, transmitting the latest US monetary tightening through the city’s linked exchange-rate system. The decision concerns the overnight discount-window base rate, a distinction that matters for investors assessing bank funding, corporate borrowing and property exposure.
The move follows the Federal Reserve’s increase in its target range to 3.75%–4.00%. Hong Kong maintains its currency within a band of HK$7.75–HK$7.85 per US dollar, connecting its monetary framework closely to dollar conditions. The base-rate adjustment reflects that system; it is not an independently chosen growth forecast or an announcement that every Hong Kong lending product rises by the same amount.
