SYDNEY, 28 June 2026 — Australia is moving to strengthen enforcement of its world-first ban on social media access for children under 16, proposing significantly higher penalties and broader investigative powers for regulators as the government argues major technology companies have failed to comply with the law.
Under proposed legislation announced on Friday, social media platforms that fail to prevent users under 16 from holding accounts could face maximum fines of A$99 million (US$68 million or approximately RM282.65 million).
