Bridgewater’s AI Chief Sekhon to Join Google DeepMind in Strategic Shift

By Steven Tech3 min read

NEW YORK, 18 March 2026 – Jasjeet Sekhon, the chief scientist and head of artificial intelligence at Bridgewater Associates, is set to join Google DeepMind as chief strategy officer, marking a notable crossover between finance and frontier AI development.

The move, announced by DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, highlights intensifying competition among major technology firms to attract top AI talent as the race to scale advanced artificial intelligence accelerates globally.

From Hedge Fund AI to Big Tech Strategy

Sekhon, who joined Bridgewater in 2018, played a central role in building the firm’s AI research and investment platform, AIA Labs, helping integrate machine learning into macro investing frameworks.

Although he led AI development efforts, he was not directly involved in investment decisions, instead focusing on advancing the firm’s data science and modelling capabilities.

Following his transition, Sekhon is expected to remain connected to Bridgewater as a member of its board of directors, ensuring continuity in strategic oversight.

DeepMind Strengthens Strategic Leadership

At DeepMind, Sekhon will take on the role of chief strategy officer, a position that signals Google’s intent to align its AI research breakthroughs with broader commercial and competitive strategy.

The appointment comes as Alphabet intensifies efforts to close the gap with leading AI players, including OpenAI and Anthropic, following a period of rapid innovation in generative AI.

DeepMind has recently launched several high-profile AI products, including its Gemini model suite and new generative tools, helping reinforce Google’s position in the global AI race.

Talent War Intensifies in AI

Sekhon’s move underscores a broader trend of talent migration from finance and academia into Big Tech, as companies compete for expertise in machine learning, data science and large-scale AI systems.

His background spans both academia and industry, having held professorships at institutions such as Harvard, UC Berkeley and Yale before transitioning into the hedge fund world.

This cross-disciplinary experience is increasingly valuable as AI evolves beyond research into real-world deployment across finance, healthcare, enterprise software and consumer applications.

AI Spending Boom Reshapes Industry

The hiring also comes amid a surge in global AI investment. Bridgewater itself has projected that major technology companies, including Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta, could collectively invest around US$650 billion in AI infrastructure this year.

Such spending reflects the scale of competition to build next-generation AI systems, where talent, computing power and data are becoming the defining competitive advantages.

Strategic Implications

Sekhon’s transition from the world’s largest hedge fund to one of the world’s leading AI labs highlights a deeper convergence between financial modelling, data science and artificial intelligence strategy.

For Google DeepMind, the hire strengthens its leadership bench at a time when AI is rapidly becoming central not only to technology innovation but also to global economic competitiveness.

For the broader market, the move signals that AI is no longer confined to tech companies, it is now a cross-industry battleground, drawing expertise from finance, academia and beyond.
