Washington, 25 September 2026 – The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral channel for incidents involving advanced artificial intelligence, creating a limited but potentially important mechanism for managing risk between the technology’s two most influential powers. A US government account of the leaders’ talks also says they established a dialogue to exchange views on benefits and hazards, with the next exchange expected by November.
The announcement is more specific than a general pledge to cooperate, but it is not yet a complete operating protocol. The public statement does not explain who would activate the channel, what threshold would qualify as an incident, how quickly either side would respond, or whether companies would have a reporting obligation. Those omissions are material for investors and operators trying to assess whether the mechanism could contain a fast-moving problem.
