Sebuyau, 22 September 2026 – U Mobile and ZTE have completed a proof-of-concept for a portable, off-grid 5G site powered by green energy in rural Sarawak. The demonstration at SK Mentu in Sebuyau was presented as a way to extend 4G and 5G coverage to underserved communities. It is an operational trial, not evidence that a nationwide rollout has been funded or that every remote site can be served at the same cost.
The business case is clear in principle. Conventional mobile towers often require a reliable grid connection, civil works and continuing maintenance; remote settlements may have too few paying customers to support that cost base. A portable system that uses local renewable power and satellite backhaul could reduce some of those barriers and speed deployment. Whether it materially lowers lifetime cost will depend on equipment prices, batteries, satellite capacity, site access and upkeep.
