Kuala Lumpur, August 25, 2025 — In a landmark gesture timed to Malaysia’s 68th National Day celebrations, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has unveiled a significantly enhanced Sinaran Merdeka Incentive 2025, offering substantial electricity fee rebates to commercial and non-domestic high-usage customers. The initiative—steered through TNB’s Corporate programme—has already captured strong interest, with 1,027 applications received by August 15.
The incentive grants eligible commercial entities specially reduced tariff rates for the month of August 2025. Customers under the Non-Domestic Low Voltage tariff will benefit from a rate of 28.91 sen per kWh, reflecting a dramatic 57% discount compared to prevailing rates. Medium Voltage users will see a 45% reduction, paying just 13.37 sen per kWh.
The rebate is calculated exclusively on increased electricity usage above the customer’s average consumption over the preceding three months—May, June, and July 2025. Eligible users will receive the rebate as a one-off credit titled “Sinaran Merdeka Incentive” when their October 2025 bills are issued.
TNB’s enhanced terms this year reflect key updates aligned with its Electricity Tariff Restructuring, effective as of July 1, 2025. These adjustments allow the incentive to apply specifically to enterprises such as skyscrapers, office towers, commercial complexes, shopping malls, hotels, and petrol stations, provided they’ve been connected to electricity before August 1, 2024, and have consumption records in the May–July window.
The longstanding scheme, first launched in 2000, has gained popularity over the years. Last year alone, TNB logged 1,863 applications, underscoring its dual appeal as a cost-saving measure and a patriotic enhancement to festive lighting and Merdeka decorations.
Feedback from participants has been full of praise. Mohd Fizan B. Mat Nor, Integrated Facility Manager of Lalaport Mall, highlighted how the programme helped enliven the festive atmosphere: “Encouraging decorative lighting on buildings and surrounding areas creates a lively and patriotic atmosphere throughout the Merdeka season.” Similarly, Abdul Hadi Ali, Deputy General Manager of Sungei Wang Plaza, lauded the initiative as aligning with national sentiment while fulfilling his centre’s corporate social responsibility.
Applications remain open until September 15, 2025, and can be submitted via the myTNB portal or at any physical Kedai Tenaga outlet. Customers seeking more information can contact TNB CareLine.
The Ledger Asia’s Take
TNB’s enhanced Sinaran Merdeka Incentive is more than a seasonal rebate—it’s an investment in national pride and economic stimulus. By targeting increased usage specifically tied to festive lighting, the programme achieves both symbolic and practical outcomes: it uplifts urban ambience while delivering tangible cost savings to businesses during Merdeka.
Most critically, this year’s streamlining—through targeted eligibility and significant markdowns (especially the 57% discount for low-voltage users)—signals TNB’s commitment to supporting commercial stakeholders through strategic tariff reform. The initiative also sets an important precedent: utility providers can play a transformative role in civic celebration, environmental stewardship, and economic efficiency all at once.
As Malaysia continues its journey toward cleaner and more equitable energy solutions, TNB’s Sinaran Merdeka Initiative stands out as a model for how national events can be woven into broader energy and cost management strategies.
