Singapore, 27 October 2026 – The National Environment Agency has commissioned three studies on nuclear safety, regulation and environmental protection as the city-state prepares for the first phase of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review in 2027. The work will assess international standards for nuclear facilities, safety requirements and the potential environmental implications of a nuclear power plant. The government has reiterated that it has made no decision to deploy nuclear energy.
The studies matter to Asian businesses and investors because nuclear power requires long lead times, specialised regulation, financing and cross-border cooperation. Singapore’s move is a capability-building step, not a project approval or construction commitment. The confirmed development is the commissioning of the assessments and preparation for the 2027 review; whether nuclear power becomes part of Singapore’s energy mix remains undecided.
