Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 17 August 2026 – The ringgit opened firmer against the United States dollar after Malaysia reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter economic growth, reinforcing the view that domestic resilience can provide support even as global energy and monetary risks remain elevated.
The currency strengthened to 4.0830/0890 at 8am from 4.0840/0885 at the previous close. The move followed gross domestic product growth of 6.0 per cent in the second quarter of 2026, a result that surprised on the upside and improved near-term investor sentiment toward Malaysian assets.
