Sepang, Malaysia, 17 August 2026 – Malaysia has begun large-scale cultivation of locally developed grain maize as it seeks to reduce complete dependence on imports and strengthen the resilience of livestock-feed supply chains.
The country currently imports about 2.5 million tonnes of grain maize annually at a cost of roughly RM3 billion. Because maize is a major component of poultry feed, international prices, freight disruption and currency movements can flow through to the cost of chicken and eggs, making local production relevant to both food security and household inflation.
