Singapore, 12 October 2026 – Emerging Asia’s expected surge in liquefied natural gas demand is becoming less certain as renewable power expands faster, gas-fired projects face delays and expensive infrastructure complicates import plans. The change does not remove LNG from the region’s energy mix, but it narrows the scale and timing of the growth once anticipated by producers and investors.
Across Southeast Asia, only 14.9 gigawatts of roughly 53 gigawatts of planned gas-fired generation is expected to enter service by 2030, according to industry estimates cited in the source material. Vietnam accounts for 25.7 gigawatts of the proposed capacity, yet many projects face financing, permitting, fuel-supply and transmission constraints. Delayed power plants also postpone the import terminals and long-term contracts designed to supply them.
