KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 13): Former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli claims his 12-year-old son was stabbed with a syringe in a deliberate attack at a Putrajaya mall, which he believes was intended to intimidate him into silence.
In a statement, Rafizi said the incident occurred around 1.45pm as his wife and son were getting into her car to leave the mall. A man allegedly dragged his son and jabbed him with a syringe.
CCTV footage, he said, showed two men on a motorcycle following his wife’s car. Dressed entirely in black with full-face helmets, the attackers appeared to be waiting for the right moment before striking.
Police responded swiftly, and Rafizi’s family has since provided statements.
“This is the first time my family has been targeted in such a manner during my political career. I believe it was meant as a warning for me to stay quiet on certain matters,” Rafizi said.
“God willing, while I will step up security measures, I will not yield to threats and will continue carrying out my duties as usual.”
Rafizi said his son is receiving treatment at Hospital UPM, and further updates on the case, medical findings, and investigation progress will come from the police and hospital.
In a separate statement, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution said he had spoken to Rafizi and assured him that the police were treating the case with utmost seriousness to identify and punish those responsible.
“All investigations will be conducted fairly and according to the law, without regard for anyone’s status or background, in line with the police’s duty to ensure safety and justice for all citizens, especially children,” Saifuddin said, wishing Rafizi’s son a speedy recovery and strength for the family.
