Penang Expands Medtech Ambitions Beyond Its Semiconductor Base

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 11 August 2026 – Penang is intensifying efforts to expand its medical-technology cluster, using the engineering skills, precision-manufacturing capabilities and supplier networks developed through decades of semiconductor investment. The strategy offers the state a path to diversify its advanced-manufacturing economy while attracting projects with high margins and long operating horizons.

Penang already hosts global medical-device manufacturers including B Braun, Abbott, Boston Scientific, Smith & Nephew and Dexcom. B Braun, which established its Malaysian presence in 1972, has invested nearly RM5 billion in the country and operates five manufacturing plants covering 180,000 square metres in Penang, making the location one of its largest production bases outside Europe.
