Kulai, Johor, Malaysia, 2 November 2026 – Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has warned that artificial intelligence is being used to create emotional images for fraudulent online donation appeals. Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) figures cited in the warning show that social media platforms received 174,099 requests to remove scam-related posts by 15 October 2026; 170,633 removals were reported, a compliance rate of about 98%.

For charities, payment providers and digital platforms, the issue is a question of trust as well as fraud control. Synthetic or manipulated distress images can make it harder for donors to judge an appeal quickly, while the reported figures do not disclose donation losses, victim numbers or how many users saw the posts. Those measures should not be conflated with the takedown total.
