San Francisco, 30 September 2026 – OpenAI is intensifying its effort to make ChatGPT a place where users discover and use third-party software, rather than only converse with an assistant. The platform ambition was emphasised alongside its latest developer-event launches. For software companies, access to a large conversational audience could reduce the need to win a separate app download; for investors, the opportunity depends on whether usage, payments and safety controls form a sustainable marketplace.
Apps inside ChatGPT are not a wholly new concept. OpenAI opened submissions and an app directory in 2025, allowing developers to place services within conversations. The newer pitch appears to broaden that distribution role as the company introduces more autonomous tools and integrations. It is therefore more accurate to describe a strategic expansion than to claim the first launch of an app marketplace this week.
