Speaking on a podcast released on Wednesday, he drew a distinction between oversight tailored to a technology’s risks and blanket legal protection for the companies developing it. His comments add a prominent hardware supplier’s voice to a policy debate with direct implications for model builders and their investors.
The question is not whether AI should be regulated at all. Huang said developers should be responsible for testing their models and indicated that rules should account for the ways particular products are used. An autonomous vehicle, for example, presents different safety and liability concerns from a general-purpose chatbot. A single regulatory bargain for every AI application could therefore obscure the risks faced by users, customers and third parties.
