Mild 4.1-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Johor — Tremors Felt Across Four States, No Damage Reported

JOHOR BAHRU, 24 August 2025 — A minor 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Segamat in Johor at approximately 6:13 a.m., sending tremors across large swathes of southern Peninsular Malaysia, including Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and southern Pahang.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) pinpointed the quake’s epicentre roughly 5 km west of Segamat, occurring at a depth of 10 km.

Not long after — at 9:00 a.m. — a second, weaker tremor registering 2.8 on the Richter scale was recorded 28 km northwest of Kluang, with tremors felt in the same general areas.

Authorities confirmed there were no casualties or significant property damage. Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, drawing from the Segamat District Officer, assured the public that all appeared well on the ground.

Residents recounted scenes of panic during the morning’s events. One individual described being startled awake as their home vibrated; another said dishes in her kitchen toppled right before sunrise. Yet, these unsettling moments ended without harm.

While the region stays free of damage, local agencies have issued cautionary advisories. The Johor state government urged residents to steer clear of unstable buildings and vigilantly follow official guidance ﹘ emphasizing that MetMalaysia continues to monitor the seismic activity closely and has confirmed there is no tsunami threat.
