Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 17 August 2026 – Malaysia’s planned MediAsas medical insurance product is facing renewed scrutiny over exclusions for pre-existing conditions and a seven-year period before its no-look-back protection takes effect, sharpening the debate over whether the scheme can support broader health-financing reform.
Health economist Professor Emeritus Dr Syed Mohamed Aljunid Syed Junid has called for the product to be withdrawn in its current form. He argues that the fully underwritten design resembles existing private medical insurance because operators may assess medical history, impose higher premiums or exclude specific conditions before accepting an applicant.
