Putrajaya, 9 October 2026 – Malaysia has retained Tier 2 status in the United States’ 2026 assessment of national efforts to combat human trafficking. The classification means the country does not yet fully meet minimum elimination standards but is making significant efforts to comply, keeping it above the Tier 2 Watch List and Tier 3 categories associated with greater diplomatic and assistance risks.
The Home Ministry welcomed the outcome and cited prosecutions of public officials suspected of involvement in trafficking, higher financial allocations for enforcement and an expansion of specialised personnel, including in Sabah and Sarawak. Retaining the rating supports the government’s stated objective of demonstrating sustained progress rather than allowing earlier improvements to reverse.
