Menlo Park, 9 October 2026 – Meta has prohibited ByteDance and third-party advertisers from running paid campaigns on Facebook and Instagram that direct users to TikTok or other ByteDance properties in seven markets. The restriction took immediate effect in the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, escalating the competition for user attention, creators and advertising budgets.
Meta described the decision as a normal commercial choice, arguing that it is not obliged to sell promotional services to a competitor seeking to move users away from its applications. The scope is broader than ByteDance’s own advertising accounts because it also covers campaigns placed by outside advertisers that link to TikTok properties, giving the policy practical significance for agencies, creators and marketing partners.
