Kuala Lumpur, 9 October 2026 – Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales reached RM173 billion in August, rising 10.5% from a year earlier and signalling continued strength across domestic distribution and consumption. The volume index increased by a more moderate 3.6%, however, indicating that price and product-mix effects contributed materially to the headline expansion and that investors should not treat nominal growth as a direct measure of real demand.

Wholesale trade led the increase, with sales up RM11.5 billion, or 16.5%, to RM81.2 billion. Retail trade advanced RM4.4 billion, or 6.5%, to RM71.7 billion, while motor-vehicle sales grew RM0.5 billion, or 2.5%, to RM20.1 billion. Together, the three segments added RM16.4 billion to the monthly comparison, but their different growth rates point to an uneven commercial environment.
