Tokyo, 4 November 2026 – Japan’s semiconductor industry could see a major ownership change as state-backed Japan Investment Corporation considers selling materials manufacturer JSR to Mitsui Chemicals.
Reuters reported that the potential transaction could exceed ¥1.3 trillion, approximately US$8.2 billion.
Japan Investment Corporation acquired JSR for approximately ¥900 billion two years earlier, seeking to support consolidation in the country’s semiconductor materials industry. JSR produces photoresists, specialised materials used in semiconductor manufacturing.
The potential transaction reflects the strategic importance of companies supplying the materials required to manufacture advanced chips.
However, the financial scale also raises questions about whether industrial consolidation can deliver sufficient returns to justify a substantial acquisition.
