Tokyo, 6 November 2026 – Japan’s inflation-adjusted wages rose 2.2% in September from a year earlier, the ninth consecutive month of gains, according to preliminary figures released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on 6 November. Nominal cash earnings increased 4.6% to ¥311,409 per worker at surveyed establishments with at least five employees. The real wage gain followed a revised 1.6% increase in August.
For Asian businesses selling into Japan, sustained gains in purchasing power would provide a firmer basis for consumer demand than higher nominal salaries alone. The report also gives investors more evidence to consider when assessing the Bank of Japan’s next decision. It does not establish that consumption has already accelerated, or that the central bank has committed to another rate rise.
