Mountain View, 30 September 2026 – Google says it will continue regular ChromeOS updates through mid-2034 while preparing a transition to its newer Googlebook operating system for qualifying devices. The clarification matters to schools, businesses and public institutions that buy laptops on multiyear replacement cycles. It does not mean every existing Chromebook will stop working in 2034, nor does it guarantee that every model can migrate to the new platform.
Google’s support guidance says current Chromebook devices will continue receiving updates for their stated support lifetime under the Auto Update policy. For qualifying machines purchased today whose ten-year support period extends beyond 2034, the company says it will help users transition, with many devices offering a direct migration path. Eligibility criteria and the practical migration process still need close attention from fleet managers.
