New York, 22 September 2026 – A coalition of 60 organisations has set a five-year goal to make artificial-intelligence tools useful in the languages and voices of an estimated 3.4 billion people currently underserved by mainstream models. Announced in New York on 21 September, the initiative brings together technology developers, researchers, governments and civil-society groups. It is a target for access, not a count of people already served.
The effort addresses a commercial and social limitation in AI: systems trained mainly on abundant online data can perform poorly in languages with fewer digital resources. The problem extends beyond written translation. Dialects, idioms and speech patterns can change meaning, especially where people rely on voice interfaces because typing is difficult or digital literacy is uneven.
