Bitcoin Extends Losses as Jerome Powell Cautions Against Rate-Cut Bets

By Chee Liang CFA2 min read

ASIA, 30 October 2025 – Bitcoin slid as much as 3.1% to below US $108,000 following remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell that dampened investor expectations for another interest-rate cut this year.

What Happened

The Fed on 29 October delivered a widely expected 25-basis-point rate cut, bringing the benchmark federal-funds rate into the 3.75%–4.00% range. However, at the post-meeting press conference, Powell emphasised that further cuts are “far from guaranteed”, citing inflation risks and labour-market strength. The hawkish tone surprised investors and triggered a short‐term pullback in liquidity-sensitive assets such as Bitcoin.

Why It Matters for Asia & Crypto Investors

  • Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are highly sensitive to global real interest rates, liquidity flows and U.S. dollar strength. A hawkish Fed outlook typically strengthens the dollar and raises real yields, reducing the appeal of non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.
  • For Asian institutional investors and asset allocators, this move serves as a reminder that crypto markets remain tightly intertwined with traditional macro-and-monetary dynamics rather than purely blockchain or decentralised narratives.
  • Moreover, the timing matters: as Asian economies continue to open up and regulatory frameworks evolve, the interplay of global policy, capital flows and digital-asset infrastructure will shape regional crypto exposure.

What to Watch Next

  • Fed forward guidance: Markets will focus on whether the Fed signals additional easing in December or early 2026, or adopts a wait-and-see stance that could prolong volatility.
  • Liquidity conditions: If quantitative tightening (QT) ends or reverses, or if global liquidity ramps up, that could restore support for Bitcoin’s risk-asset profile.
  • China-U.S. trade and regulatory developments: Any shift in major-power relations or crypto-regulation (including in Asia) could quickly shift sentiment.
  • Technical levels for Bitcoin: Watch whether US $108,000 acts as support in the short term, and if leverage liquidations intensify – for example, one data-provider estimated over US$800 m in crypto futures liquidations amid the recent move.

Conclusion

While the 25-basis-point rate cut might superficially appear bullish for crypto, it was the hawkish tone from Powell that weighed on Bitcoin. For Asian and global crypto investors, the key takeaway is: when the Fed cuts but signals caution, risk-assets like Bitcoin may face near-term headwinds until clarity on the next move emerges.

In short, the era of “rates only go down so everything goes up” may be over, and crypto investors must now navigate a more nuanced policy-driven landscape.
