KUALA LUMPUR, 21 October 2025 – More than 10,000 police officers and personnel will be deployed to ensure smooth and secure proceedings during the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit, which Malaysia will host in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28.
Describing it as one of the most complex and challenging security operations ever undertaken, Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) Director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said preparations were 90% complete ahead of the high-profile event.
“We are prepared for any eventuality, with security being our top priority,” he said.
A total of 10,212 police personnel will be mobilised, primarily from the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor contingents, as well as the General Operations Force, to maintain order and ensure the safety of dignitaries, delegates, and the public throughout the summit.
Security Operations in Full Readiness
Datuk Seri Azmi said preparations covered tactical planning, strategic deployment, coordination with other agencies, logistics, and protocol management, all of which were progressing smoothly.
“There are only a few minor matters to iron out before the summit begins, but we are on track,” he told The Star.
He said officers were already on the ground to familiarise themselves with venues and duties, with tasks ranging from VIP protection and venue security to delegate accommodation oversight, traffic control, and intelligence gathering.
“Police personnel are already on the ground to familiarise themselves with their duties and surroundings,” he said.
The force is also coordinating with international and regional security agencies to exchange intelligence and security assessments to prevent any security breaches.
“We are paying close attention to the safety of world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, senior Russian representatives, and other ASEAN leaders,” Azmi added.
Warning Against Disruptive Gatherings
At a separate briefing, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said police would take stern action against any gatherings or rallies that could disrupt the summit’s proceedings or obstruct traffic.
“We have engaged with the organisers of the rallies. Stern action will be taken against any gatherings that disrupt traffic, interrupt the ASEAN Summit, or jeopardise public order,” he warned.
Fadil also urged the public to cooperate with traffic police as several city centre roads will be temporarily closed or diverted in stages throughout the summit period.
Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship Culmination
The 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings, to be held under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” mark the culmination of Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN chairmanship. The event is expected to draw participation from heads of state and senior leaders across the region and major dialogue partners.
