Alor Gajah, Malaysia, 27 October 2026 – Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said Malaysian Palm Oil Board monitoring found that recent fires in Indonesia had not started on Malaysian-owned plantations, but had spread into them from neighbouring areas. Her remarks responded to an allegation by Indonesian environmental group Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI), which said 21 companies linked to or affiliated with Malaysian business groups were involved in fires between January and September. WALHI’s report recorded 30,927 hotspots nationwide during that period.
The dispute matters to Asian plantation investors because environmental claims can affect regulatory scrutiny, certification, market access and company reputation. The minister’s account and WALHI’s findings are competing claims, not a final determination of responsibility. Satellite hotspots identify heat signals; by themselves, they do not prove who started a fire or whether it began inside an operating plantation.
