New York, 9 October 2026 – Global chipmakers came under renewed pressure after a lower estimate for OpenAI’s annualised revenue revived questions about whether the artificial-intelligence investment cycle can support the valuations built around it. The Nasdaq 100 fell 1.4%, while a gauge of major semiconductor companies declined 3.4%, making revenue conversion rather than infrastructure demand the market’s immediate focus.

OpenAI was reported to be generating annualised revenue of roughly US$50 billion based on current performance, below estimates of nearly US$70 billion cited only weeks earlier. Neither figure is equivalent to audited full-year revenue, and the comparison does not by itself establish a deterioration in the business. It does reveal how sensitive AI-linked assets have become to shifting expectations for model usage and monetisation.
